Circumcisions are performed in the United States every day. A circumcision is the removal of the skin that covers the tip of a penis (also called the foreskin). Traditionally, in the United States, circumsions are performed on new babies before they leave the hospital under parental permission. There are many medical benefits to receiving a circumcision including a lower risk of urinary tract infections, STDs and penile cancer. The only risks associated with a circumcision are bleeding or infection, but these are generally low. These risks will be higher and increased in older boys and in a circumcision for adults.
The urologists at the North Dallas Urology Associates are able to perform routine foreskin circumcisions at area hospitals. Parents should decide what is best for their sons, based on their cultural, religious, and personal preferences. A circumcision for adult males should be closely discussed with your urologist.
