It is estimated that more than 13 million people are affected by STDs annually. Sexually transmitted diseases are diseases that are spread directly through sexual contact. There are roughly two dozen known sexually transmitted diseases—each ranging in severity and all caused by some form of a pathogen (i.e. a virus, bacteria, parasite, etc.).
A sexually transmitted disease can affect any person regardless of their social, economic class or race. STDs can be painful, embarrassing, debilitating and at times, life threatening.
Common sexually transmitted diseases include:
- HPV (Human papillomavirus)
Many common sexually transmitted diseases can be treated with medications such as antibiotics. STD treatment will depend on the disease and how long the patient has had it. STD treatment for some of the more serious and life threatening sexually transmitted diseases such HIV/AIDS, as well as hepatitis, will require life-long monitoring for the rest of the patient’s life.
Every STD has its own range of symptoms. Some will be milder than others, but the most common symptoms include a burning or itching in the genital area, genital blisters and warts, abdominal pain and cramping, fever, chills and even more debilitating symptoms. Exercising abstinence and using condoms are the only ways to help prevent a person from getting an STD.
