Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a common urological condition that affects men of any age. It is an inflammation or infection of the prostate. More than half of all men will be affected with prostatitis at some point in their lives. There are many symptoms of prostatitis that will occur with this condition.

Symptoms of prostatitis include:

  • Chills, fever, fatigue
  • Lower back pain and dull body aches
  • Painful urination
  • Trouble urinating
  • A burning or stinging feeling when urinating
  • Strong, frequent urge to urinate
  • Abdominal pain or pain in the lower belly, groin or scrotum
  • Rectal pressure or pain
  • Genital and rectal throbbing
  • Urethral discharge with bowel movements
  • Painful ejaculation (sexual climax)
  • Sexual problems and loss of sex drive

Prostatitis is most often caused by bacteria. Certain conditions can also put a man at higher risk for developing prostatitis including a recent bladder infection, an enlarged prostate, urinary tract infections. Prostatitis is not contagious. Also, having this condition does not increase your risk of any other prostate disease.

It is important to discuss all symptoms of prostatitis with your urologist so that the exact type of prostatitis can be determined and the right course of treatment prescribed. Acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis is routinely treated with antibiotics. For nonbacterial prostatitis, medications are used to reduce the difficulty in urination and anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed for pain. Lifestyle changes, including diet and stress management, may be suggested.

You may also be given a medicine for prostatitis treatment called an alpha blocker to relax some of the tissue in the prostate in addition to a medication that helps shrink the prostate. No single solution works for everyone with this condition.
