Penile Prosthesis for Erectile Dysfunction

Millions of men suffer from erectile dysfunction. Also referred to as “ED” or impotence, erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Many men will experience some form of erectile dysfunction after the age of 40.

Erectile dysfunction has many treatment alternatives to consider. If the cause of the problem is due to stress, anxiety or a psychological condition, certain treatments may be considered over surgery. If the cause is medically related and if oral medications fail to work, there are other options to consider.

There are numerous new erectile dysfunction treatment options that have proven to be successful. The urologists at North Dallas Urology Associates have several penile prosthesis’ and implants to choose from that have helped many patients resume a normal erection and a satisfying sex life. Penile implants for ED should be considered after careful consultation with your urologist.

One such treatment for erectile dysfunction is a non-inflatable penis implant consisting of a sterile, non-pyrogenic, single-use implant. This penile prosthesis includes a pair of cylinders surgically inserted into the penis which is manually positioned by the male. It is easy to use by the male or his partner and is totally concealed within the body.

Our urologists also carry a 3-piece inflatable penis implant available in a variety of sizes and models. This prosthesis is surgically implanted and performed as an out-patient procedure under general anesthesia. This device usually involves surgically placing inflatable cylinder devices into both sides of the penis. Two additional pieces are also used: A reservoir containing liquid and a pump. These pieces are also connected to the system and is placed under the loose skin of the scrotal sac, between the testicles. To inflate the penile prosthesis, a man simply presses on the pump that transfers liquid from the reservoir to the cylinders. When this occurs, an erection is the result. When sexual intercourse is over, pressing on the deflation valve will deflate the penile prosthesis.

There are many reasons why a man may be experiencing erectile dysfunction. Treatment for erectile dysfunction is available and penile implants for ED are considered an effective treatment option in properly selected patients. It is important to outline those causes and develop a treatment plan suitable for both lifestyle and desired outcome.
