If a mans PSA is elevated or his prostate is felt to be abnormal on exam, a prostate biopsy is recommended. A prostate biopsy is a test used in which small samples of tissue will be removed from the prostate and then examined carefully under a microscope by a pathologist. During a prostate biopsy procedure, a small, thin needle will be inserted through the rectum. This is also known as a transrectal biopsy. This is the most common method used. Many patients will require an enema before the biopsy procedure. Once the test has been performed, the sample will be examined to determine abnormalities. This minimally invasive procedure will require a local anesthetic and is done as an out patient procedure.
